.Hull Sharks v Durham Saints 8.11.09
On an overcast day, with a damp Durham field a new Sharks team opened their 2009/10 season.
Wearing bright white the sharks had the opening drive after a deep kick by the saints. A few early mistakes by the sharks pulled the sharks back at the start of their drive as they pushed the saints back to their own half. With a good punt by James Allot Durham fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Sam Gennings.
After another strong drive with runs from rookies Jon Farrow and Martin Chungong and with an impressive dive by veteran fullback Adam Weston the sharks drive ended.
So the focus turned to the Sharks defence, held together by a lot of returning bug hitters the Saints opening play was cut short with a tackle for a loss of 3 yards. The following play went the way of Durham, with an impressive sweep breaking the sharks contain moving them 20 yards down field.
The Saints drive was then held by Hull with a swift 3 and out,, to be replaced by an eager sharks offence.
The same continued for the rest of the first three quarters with big hits from both defences, notably by Kevin Onimole the game MVP, until half way through the fourth, when running back Jon Farrow ran the ball in from 20 yards to score the only points of the game.
The defensive battled continued until the final whistle as Durham tried to claw back a draw.
Overall a good day for both teams with lots of lessons learnt for the season to come.
